A Myers’ IV cocktail, also known as a Myers’ cocktail and IV vitamin therapy, is a special solution of vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are combined together and administered by a medical practitioner through a needle into the bloodstream. The first known use of Myers' cocktail was in the 1960s by a doctor named John Myers MD at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Frustrated by his inability to help people with conditions such as chronic fatigue and depression, he created a combination of vitamins, minerals and nutrients and begin injecting it intravenously into patients to try and improve their symptoms. Although the exact ingredients in the Myers' cocktail used by Dr. Myers is unknown, his work helped build a foundation that has been expanded on in the decades since. His successor, Dr. Alan Gaby continued his work by creating his own Myers’ IV cocktail ingredient blends. From these origins, many variants of Myers’ cocktail ingredient solutions have been developed and utilized across the country. Today, the Myers' cocktail continues to grow in popularity as an alternative therapy that might help with a variety of conditions.
Why might someone need Myers' IV vitamin therapy instead of just eating better or taking a vitamin supplement or pill? One primary difference offered by a Myers’ cocktail is that it is administered directly into one's bloodstream through a vein in the arm. Many believe that this direct infusion utilized in the Myers' cocktail solution is more effective in delivering minerals and nutrients to different areas of the body.
Does it really matter that the ingredients in a Myers’ cocktail are delivered this way? In our opinion, it does. First of all, many people cannot swallow pills easily. Even if they can, some people have trouble breaking down and absorbing the contents of pills because their digestive systems lack appropriate levels of digestive enzymes or their gut linings have been damaged. Also, when people are able to take pills, it is not uncommon to experience side effects like stomach irritation or loose stools from the ingredients themselves. In contrast, by delivering nutrients and minerals directly into the bloodstream, a Myers’ cocktail may improve the chance that these nutrients get to where they need to go in the body with minimal discomfort.
Myers’ cocktails are administered either via a process called an IV push, or injection, or as part of an Accesa IV drip. A Myers’ push takes about 15 minutes to complete. If the Myers’ cocktail is part of a drip, the entire process takes about 30-45 minutes to complete. While this may sound painful to some people, the whole process is actually quite painless. In fact, many people report feeling relaxed as the replenishing nutrients fill their body.
After the Myers’ cocktail, some people feel a little dizzy or lightheaded for a few minutes. This is normal and is one of the reasons we recommend drinking plenty of water before and after receiving a Myers’ cocktail. Also, do not be surprised if your urine changes color as the vitamins pass through your body. Many people report experiencing surges of energy after receiving B vitamin injections and it is one of the reasons that some people prefer getting their IV Myers’ cocktail earlier in the day.
The day after receiving our Myers' cocktail, some of our patients report feeling more energy and rejuvenated with a better overall mood. Some report that they have an easier time focusing on daily tasks. Depending on your baseline nutritional status, these symptoms can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. And, unfortunately, some people notice little to no effect at all. The only way to know is to give a Myers' cocktail a try and see how it works for you.
At Accesa Health, we administer a Myers' push as it is faster and enables us to customize delivery of the Myers’ ingredients to each patient. To perform the push, the medical provider has to insert a small needle (sometimes called a butterfly needle) into the patient’s forearm. This is mostly painless and the needle is secured to the forearm. Then, the Myers’ cocktail is slowly pushed manually through the tubing and into the forearm using a syringe. Once the push is complete, the needle is removed and a simple bandage is applied. If you never received a Myers’ cocktail before, it’s recommended to start them on a weekly basis for one month. After the first month, you can definitely keep going with them weekly or switch to once or twice a month (depending on how you feel). There are different lab tests for nutrient deficiencies that you can get that might help you find the optimal schedule for you.
