What is coronavirus? Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that affect mammals, including humans, and are notable for their crown-like appearance when viewed under a microscope. When people refer to a coronavirus today, they are generally referring to the specific coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China. This specific virus, named SARS-CoV-2, causes the illness coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19.
The COVID-19 antibody test, also known as a coronavirus antibody test and coronavirus titer, is a lab test that checks for the presence of IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) in the blood. When they develop, IgG antibodies typically take 10-14 days to be detectable. An IgG positive result may suggest an immune response to a primary infection with SARS-CoV-2, but the relationship between IgG positivity and immunity to SARS-CoV-2 has not yet been firmly established.
